Arts in Education occurs when teachers use the arts as tools for
addressing the arts standards and teaching curricula in other academic
subjects. Ideally, arts in education programs are an integral component
of a school district's educational curriculum. They enable students,
teachers, and the school community at large to participate in arts
activities, integrate art into the curriculum, gain an understanding of
the artistic process, and learn about the possibility of art as a career
option. Interacting with another creative person can act as a catalyst
for new approaches to teaching.
Using the arts enriches instruction by connecting curriculum with
imaginative, interactive, engaging, activities. It enhances students'
creativity and increases problem solving abilities, creative thinking,
communication skills, literacy skills , both cultural and non-verbal and
encourages and nurtures uniqueness in students. It enables students to
acquire aesthetic judgement, develop self esteem, and increase cross
cultural understanding. Research indicates curriculum rich in the arts
improve student performance in other subject areas and helps them become
more sensitive to the world around them.
The arts are valuable in and of themselves. They are a source of
human insight and understanding about the world and ourselves. They
connect us to the past and help us imagine new possibilities for the
future.
The arts represent multiple forms of intelligence and multiple ways
of knowing the world that are not duplicated by other means. For the
learners, the arts invite both active learning and reflection, affirm
diversity of learning and are intrinsically rewarding, resulting in
motivation to learn.
Dance, theatre, music and visual arts are the core of the New
York State Learning Standards in the Arts. Through these standards,
the schools of New York State take their place in encouraging children
and young adults to explore and participate in the arts and to reap
continued enjoyment of the arts in the home, work place, and community.
The standards alone only provide the broadest
outline for instruction in the arts, as recommended by the
Curriculum and Assessment Committee for the Arts.
The BOCES Arts in Education CoSer (Cooperative Service Agreement)
supports the use of artists to address the NYS Learning
Standards for the Arts and encourages integrating the arts into
units of instruction. Contact your BOCES Arts in Education Coordinator
