We recommend that thoughtful planning occur prior to selecting an artist
to work in your school. You are encouraged to take the following
actions. Create a planning committee of teachers, administrators
and parents to meet and discuss artist selection. Carefully consider the
purpose for bringing an artist to the school, how this art experience
improves learning for the students, and how it integrates with the
curriculum goals. Identify one or several artists or arts
organizations that address the purpose. Have preliminary discussions
with the artist(s) and conversations with teachers, parents
or administrators from other schools where the artist has worked.
After selecting an artist or arts organization planning
between the selected artists, teachers, administrators and parents is
essential. Good planning includes the following items: discussion of the
purpose for the activity, details of what will occur each time the
artist is with the students, what the artist needs to be successful,
what the school can provide, what preparations do students need, what is
the follow-up activity; and how the art experience will be evaluated.
Clearly define the results of these discussions keeping in mind that
misunderstanding can occur when the planning committee and artist have
different perceptions regarding these items.
Taking the time beforehand will create a more successful arts in
education experience for your students.
